Ballymoney Hockey Club European
Cup Winners Cup 2002 Gala Dinner; Saturday 6 October 2001
Willie John McBride, MBE, former British Lions captain, was fulsome in his praise of
Ballymoney Hockey Club's achievement in reaching the European Cup Winners Cup 2002. Willie
John was guest speaker at the County Antrim Club's Gala dinner on Saturday evening in the
Causeway Coast Hotel, Portrush.
Club President, Moyra McElderry, welcomed Willie John, his wife Penny, Councillor Bill
Kennedy, Mayor of Ballymoney, his wife Irene and two hundred invited guests to the most
glittering social event in the Club's history (McBride

Willie John, who is no stranger to
Ballymoney, delighted the packed audience with tales of his early days lodging in the
town, training in the area and, of course, playing and captaining Ireland and the Lions in
their famous glory days. "Loyalty and team spirit " were the qualities he spoke
of highly and recommended to the Ballymoney squad in their preparations for their own trip
of a lifetime to the European arena.
Guests also heard from Lynsey McVicker and Angela Platt, who have just returned from a
successful tournament in France, where they helped Ireland qualify for the Hockey World
Cup in Perth, Australia in September 2002. Lynsey was top Irish goalscorer during the
tournament and her "Golden Goal" in extra time against Scotland secured
Ireland's 5th place and set them on their way Down Under.
As well as entertaining the guests with stories of legendary heroes, Willie John
generously donated a signed limited edition print of the British Lions Dream Team for
auction on the night. This duly made top price in the auction, which was conducted in his
own inimitable style by Gerry McAfee and which, along with a prize draw, raised over
£5,000 for the European fundraising campaign.
The evening was marked by the presentation from Ballymoney's main sponsor, Star Fuels, of
a commemorative silver salver to Moyra McElderry for her services to Ballymoney Hockey
Club. John Kane, Chairman of Star Fuels, praised Moyra for her dedication and commitment
down the years and expressed the gratitude of all the members, supporters and friends of
the Club for everything that she had done and continues to do for hockey in the area.
Alison Algeo, Club Secretary and MC for the evening, rounded off a superb evening's
entertainment by thanking guests of honour, Mr and Mrs McBride, all those who had
supported the event and, in particular, Mr Alistair Kennedy and his staff from the
Causeway Coast Hotel for a wonderful reception and dinner.
